Why We Built This Site
Iowa provides several ways to obtain public criminal-record information, but each custodian answers a different question. Clay County Jail is the direct source for current custody and booking inquiries, while the Clay County Clerk of Court holds charges, docket activity, judgments, and dispositions. The Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation provides the state's criminal-history record check. Iowa Offender Search covers state custody and supervision, and the Iowa Sex Offender Registry serves public-notification needs. This site brings the verified contacts, official portals, known fees, and request steps together without treating those separate records as interchangeable.
What You Will Find Here
- Court record directions: how to search and understand Clay County criminal court cases
- State check instructions: how Iowa DCI name-based checks and fingerprint-supported records differ
- Custodian contacts: where to reach the Clay County Sheriff, Clerk of Court, jail, and state record systems
- Expungement information: where qualifying relief begins under Iowa law and why court and DCI records may differ
What We Cannot Do
Clay County Criminal History is a privately operated reference site. It is not connected with an Iowa court, sheriff, police department, county office, or state agency. Those limits mean the site cannot:
- Run an official record check or retrieve a person's criminal history
- Submit an expungement petition, public-record request, or other filing for a visitor
- Issue a certified court document, criminal-history response, or agency record
- Offer legal advice about a charge, warrant, judgment, or individual case
- Promise that an office's hours, address, fee, or procedure has not changed
An official copy must come from its custodian, such as the Clay County Sheriff, Clerk of Court, or Iowa DCI. This site can identify that office but cannot issue the record.
Search Partners
Outside providers operate search boxes that appear on some pages. Each provider controls its own results, prices, terms, and service. If a visitor follows one of those tools and purchases a service, this site may receive a referral payment. That support helps make the reference material available without a visitor fee, but it does not give this site control over a partner's charges or results.
